Oklahoma senior guard Buddy Hield scored 39 points to lead the Sooners to a 79-76 win over Iowa State in the Big 12 Tournament quarterfinals on Thursday night, March 10, at the Sprint Center in Kansas City, Missouri.
Hield set a school Big 12 Tournament record and scored the second most points ever in a tournament game to lead OU to just their second conference tourney win under head coach Lon Kruger.
Hield virtually carried the Sooners in the first half, scoring 18 of OU’s 35 points as they led by six at halftime.
He got more help in the second half, but still had 21 of OU’s 44 points after halftime.
Hield broke Corey Brewer’s OU Big 12 Tournament record of 33 set at the first Big 12 tourney in 1997 against Missouri.
He also tied the the Big 12 Tournament record for made field goals with 14 and was 9-for-9 at the free throw line.
Oklahoma built the lead to 14 in the second half, before Iowa State rallied led by their own senior, forward Georges Niang, who made 7 of 8 Cyclone baskets to cut the OU lead to six, 67-61.
Niang finished with 31 points to tie his career high.
Two other Sooners scored in double figures with Ryan Spangler scoring 10 points and adding 12 rebounds, while Isaiah Cousins had 10 points as well.
Oklahoma was just 4 for 21 from three point range, and were outshot and outrebounded.
The Sooners will face West Virginia at around 8:30 in the Big 12 Tournament semifinals Friday in Kansas City.
OU improved to 24-6 with the win.
