A long three pointer by Buddy Hield that would have won the game against West Virginia in the semifinals of the Big 12 Tournament was ruled just a split second too late on replay review and the Sooners lost to the Mountaineers 69-67, on Friday night, March 11, at the Sprint Center in Kansas City, Missouri.

The waved off basket negated a 17-3 Sooner run late in the second half after OU fell behind by 12 points and appeared to be headed to a sure defeat.

Freshman guard Christian James sparked the Sooner rally, scoring 10 of his career high 13 points during a five minute stretch that gave OU a 67-64 lead with just under two minutes to play.

Ryan Spangler missed two free throws that could have given OU a five point lead with 1:05 left, and that opened the door for West Virginia.

Jaysean Paige responded with a jumper with 11 seconds left to give the Mountaineers a 68-67 lead.

James had a chance to put Oklahoma on top, but was short on a layup attempt in traffic.

West Virginia’s Jonathan Holt made one free throw with 1.8 seconds left, setting up Buddy Hield’s dramatic 3 point attempt at the buzzer.

It was a disappointing end to a disappointing game for Hield, who was held to just six points on 1-8 shooting from the field.

Turnovers were another killer for Oklahoma.  The Sooners committed a season high 21 against the WVU pressure defense.

The Mountaineers are not known for their three-point shooting,  but made 10 in the game, with six coming from Jevon Carter, who led all scorers with 26 points.

OU outshot WVU 49 percent to 38 percent, but outscorec by the Mountaineers off turnovers 24-17, and in fast break points 12-5.

Oklahoma falls to 25-7 on the season.

The Sooners will find out their NCAA Tournament fate on Selection Sunday, March 13.

OU is expected to be a #2 seed and play at Chesapeake Arena in the sub-regional in Oklahoma City.

West Virginia advances to the Big 12 Championship Game to play Kansas at 5:00 on Saturday, March 12.
