Oklahoma’s football team clinched a spot in the Big 12 Championship Game with a 41-3 win over Kansas on Saturday at Memorial Stadium in Lawrence, Kansas.
OU quarterback Baker Mayfield completed his 3-year Sooner career with a perfect record in true road games as the Sooners won their 16th straight true road contest.
Mayfield was also the subject of several episodes of poor sportsmanship, on both teams’ part.
After both teams punted on their opening possession, the Sooners took advantage of a short field, going 41 yards in 4 plays for a touchdown.
On 4th and 3 from the Jayhawks’ 34-yard line, Baker Mayfield rolled out, scrambled to avoid the rush, and before he could get tackled or run out of bounds, found Rodney Anderson with a dump off pass, and Anderson took it down the sideline, diving over the pylon for a 34-yard touchdown to give OU a 7-0 lead with 6:40 to play in the first quarter.
Kansas got a 23-yard field goal from Gabriel Rui early in the second quarter to cut OU’s lead to 7-3.
Oklahoma’s defense got a turnover midway in the second quarter, as Emmanuel Beal intercepted a tipped pass at the Jayhawks’ 11-yard line.
That set up a 3-yard touchdown run by Jordan Smallwood to give the Sooners a 14-3 lead with 7:27 to play in the second quarter.
Late in the first half, OU extended the lead, with Mayfield throwing an inside screen to Marquise Brown, who cut back across the field, right to left on his way to a 24-yard touchdown to put the Sooners up 21-3 with 10 seconds left in the first half.
Mayfield was 20-for-30 passing for 257 yards and 3 touchdowns.
He’s now thrown a touchdown pass in 37 straight games and two touchdowns in 24 straight games, both of them Big 12 records.
Kansas’ opening possession of the second half ended with Rui missing a 39-yard field goal attempt wide right.
Oklahoma extended their lead later in the third quarter, with Mayfield passing deep to Mykel Jones for 34 yards, then to Mark Andrews for a 3-yard touchdown to put the Sooners up 28-3 with 4:52 to play in the third.
After the touchdown, Mayfield grabbed his crotch as he yelled in the direction of the Jayhawks bench.
Early in the fourth quarter, Austin Seibert kicked a 27-yard field goal to give OU a 31-3 lead with 13:58 to play.
Oklahoma got another touchdown later in the fourth on a 25-yard touchdown run by Trey Sermon, putting the Sooners up 38-3 with 12:09 to play.
Seibert capped the scoring with a 32-yard field goal to make it 41-3 with 4:39 to play.
The Jayhawks had just 155 total yards in the game.
Kansas captains refused to shake Mayfield’s hand before the coin toss at midfield, creating some antagonism before the game even started.
Kansas’ Hasan Defense was called for a late hit on Mayfield after he threw a pass in the first half.
Oklahoma has won 13 in a row over Kansas and seven straight in Lawrence.
The Sooners clinched a spot in the Big 12 Championship Game with the win and improved to 10-1 on the season, 7-1 in conference play.
OU head coach Lincoln Riley ties the school record for wins in the debut season by a Sooner coach, matching Chuck Fairbanks in 1967 and Barry Switzer in 1973.
Oklahoma closes the season next Saturday at home against West Virginia.
