While it will not directly impact Memorial Stadium, lightning will continue to be a threat through about 4:15pm. Storms are not severe, however they are producing many cloud to ground lightning strikes, some even several miles away from the rain. The worst of the thunderstorms should exit the area by 4:30.”

The start of the Oklahoma vs. Texas Tech football game in Norman today has been delayed because of bad weather moving through the area. Sitting here in the press box, however, we’re mystified about just what and where the “bad weather” is. It sprinkled at best at Memorial Stadium, yet early arriving fans were ushered out of their seats and forced to go underneath the stadium until the “all clear” was announced, which occurred about 2:30pm. Then, the announcement was made in the press box by OU Director of Media Relations Pete Moris that the weather has cleared out of the Norman area and the game will kick-off at 3:46pm.
Ironically, their was a long 2 and a half hour weather delay two years ago in Norman, when the Sooners and Texas Tech played on Owen Field. The weather delay came in the middle of the game, when Oklahoma was actually playing pretty well, and afterwards it was all Texas Tech as the Red Raiders stunned the Sooners 41-38 to end OU’s long 39-game home field winning streak.
We’re told the teams have just been relaxing in the various locker rooms, while KFOR-TV photojournalist Norris Kyles says the fans underneath the stadium were well-behaved and very patient before entering the venue to find their seats, once they were allowed back in. At present, both teams are on the field for their pre-game warmups.
Another story, the Daily Oklahoman ran an article in their Saturday sports edition with a big picture of Texas Tech head coach Kliff Kingsbury and the giant headline “OVERRATED” by the photo. The Texas Tech people reportedly notified the coach about the article and, at Kingsbury’s request, a copy of the picture and headline was on the training table in front of *every* Texas Tech player when they ate their pre-game breakfast. Will the motivation work? Is still another weather delay before these two Big 12 teams another bad omen for Oklahoma?
