BOWLING GREEN,OH–The Tulsa Golden Hurricane took the field for their season opener Thursday night, coming off an 11-win season a year ago…and a Conference USA championship.

Head coach Bill Blankenship was pretty confident in his offense, with returning starters Cody Green and Trey Watts at quarterback and running back.

As it turns out, the offense apparently didn’t make the trip to Ohio, Tulsa had more turnovers than Bob Jr. in the KFOR “break room”, and it ended up being one of the most dismal efforts in TU’s short era with Blankenship as the head man.

Bowling Green took advantage of several Tulsa mistakes and stormed past the Golden Hurricane 34-7.

Cody Green was so ineffective, he was replaced with 8:00 remaining in the game by redshirt freshman Dane Evans, who threw a 27-yard TD pass to Derek Patterson for Tulsa’s only points of the night.

In the lowlights you’ll see on kfor.com, Blankenship was grumpy throughout the night (and who could blame him?).

Punter Cole Way was stopped short on a fake punt deep in Tulsa’s end, which led to a BG touchdown and a 20-0 lead late in the 3rd quarter.

Tulsa’s Trey Watts fumbled a BG punt which set up another Falcon TD to make it 27-0 and Bowling Green ran back a TU punt 67-yards for the stunning 34-0 lead midway through the final stanza.

Finally, Dane Evans replaced Green at QB-1 and zipped Tulsa down-field, hitting Derek Patterson for the lone TD of the night for Tulsa (0-1).

The Golden Hurricane returns to T-town for it’s home opener Saturday, Sept. 7th against Colorado State before travelling to Norman for a Sept. 14th game at Oklahoma.
