The stakes were high for the 112th annual meeting of Oklahoma and Oklahoma State, a game that had tremendous implications for both schools’ hopes of a Big 12 Championship, and their future in the College Football Playoff Picture.
Oklahoma State’s defense started off with a bang, on Oklahoma’s opening drive, Baker Mayfield’s pass was intercepted by A.J. Green.
The Cowboys were unable to convert the turnover into a touchdown, and settled for a field goal by Matt Amendola to put Oklahoma State up 3-0 with just over 12 minutes to go in the first quarter.
The first touchdown of the game came with nine minutes to go in the first quarter as Baker Mayfield found Dimitri Flowers on a 49 yard touchdown pass. The Sooners jumped out to a 9-3 lead.
The Cowboys responded. A six play 75 yard drive highlighted by a 60 yard pass from Mason Rudolph to Tyron Johnson, was capped off by a one yard touchdown pass to Marcell Ateman. The Cowboys took a 10-7 lead with less than seven minutes to go in the first.
The third lead change in the first quarter came when Baker Mayfield hit Jeff Badet with a five yard touchdown pass, and the Sooners took a 14-10 lead.
In the second quarter, Oklahoma continued its momentum as Baker Mayfield ran in for a seven yard score to put the Sooners up 21-10.
46 seconds was all it took for Oklahoma State to respond. A 52 yard pass from Rudolph to James Washington would set up a six yard touchdown run by Justice Hill. The score was 21-17 with 14 minutes remaining in the quarter.
But the fireworks were just getting started. On the very next drive, Mayfield found Marquise Brown who turned on the jets, for the one play 84 yard touchdown.
Buckle up, this one is a wild ride. Rudolph and company marched down the field on their next drive and pulling back within four with a three yard touchdown pass to Ateman on fourth and goal. The touchdown made it a 28-24 game, with the Sooners in the lead.
The eighth touchdown of the game came as Rodney Anderson cashed in on a 14 yard highlight-reel-worthy run. The score was 35-24 with eight minutes to go in the half.
Rudolph capitalized on his next chance on the field. The Cowboy’s quarterback found his main man, James Washington on a 35 yard strike to make it 35-31.
The Sooners had to settle for an Austin Seibert field goal on their ensuing drive and the Cowboys capitalized. Justice Hill started the Poke’s march with a 27 yard run, and then finished the five play drive off with a 30 yard touchdown. Oklahoma State tied the game at 38 with 33 seconds remaining in the half.
The fireworks continued in the second half.
The Cowboys could not score as the Sooners put points on the board first with a 36 yard field goal, then Mayfield connected with Rodney Anderson for a 43 yard score.
Oklahoma State found some rhythm in the fourth quarter, with a 33 yard touchdown pass from Rudolph to Tyron Johnson.
Once again Mayfield answered, finding Marquise Brown on a 77 yard connection that once again stretched the Sooner lead to 10.
Rudolph found Johnson in the end zone once more with less than two minutes to go in the game to make the score 55-52.
But a costly interception and turnover on downs by the Pokes eventually led to another OU touchdown, a 53 yard run by Trey Sermon, which would be the final score of the game.
The Sooners win their third consecutive Bedlam, final score 62-52.
Baker Mayfield had 598 yards on 24-36 pass attempts and six total touchdowns.
