KAZAN, Russia — The United States women’s basketball team took control midway through the final half and never gave it up as the Americans blasted Russia 90-71 Monday to win the World University Games gold medal in Kazan. Team USA was coached by OU women’s leader Sherri Coale and one of the players who metaled is Sooners star guard Aaryn Ellenberg.

The U.S. was never headed in the championship game after advancing with a squeaky-tight 79-78 win over Australia in the semifinals. Ellenberg had just two points in the title tilt, but she had spurts in earlier games where she lit up the scoreboard, just like she did for Coale’s club in Norman during the past several seasons.

The coach and star OU player join Oklahoma State men’s star Marcus Smart as international gold medalists this summer. Smart, the OSU sophomore-to-be and reigning “Big 12 Player of the Year” helped Team USA win the gold medal in the Under-19 tournament in the Czech Republic last month.
