OKC Thunder assistant coach accepts head job in Detroit

OKLAHOMA CITY – The OKC Thunder is losing a coach to Michigan.

Assistant coach Maurice Cheeks has accepted a head coaching job with the Detroit Pistons after four seasons in Oklahoma City.

ESPN.com reported the former all-star point guard will replace Lawrence Frank in his third head coaching position.

Cheeks has a career record of 284-286 after stints coaching the Philadelphia 76ers and  and Portland Trailblazers, according to ESPN’s report.

ESPN reported the Pistons also interviewed Atlanta Hawks coach Larry Drew, former Phoenix Suns interim coach Lindsey Hunter, San Antonio Spurs assistant coach Mike Budenholzer and New York Knicks assistant Darrell Walker.
