OKLAHOMA CITY — Wes Welker, a native Oklahoman, is preparing for his second showing at a Super Bowl. His family currently resides in Oklahoma City and has high hopes for Wes. Wes attended Heritage Hall before heading to Texas Tech and then on to the big time.

His father, Leland Welker, says he couldn’t be more proud of his son.

“This opportunity doesn’t come along very often, and for him to have his second Super Bowl, hopefully he can win this one.”

Leland says the beginning years were hard because not everyone believed in his son.

“He’s 5’9″, 185, he’s not supposed to be able to do what he’s doing. Nobody can believe it really.”

But his friends and family can.

Best friend and singer-songwriter Graham Colton says he knew Wes was destined for greatness.

“I’m not surprised where he is, at all, and I will say I predicted it,” Colton said.

Colton says when Wes was in the sixth grade he was on the soccer team, not the football team.

He went to the coach and told him to give Wes a shot.

“The coach said, ‘No, no, no. We already have a running back.’ And I said, ‘You don’t understand, I’ve got your running back,’” Colton says.

Friends and family also describe Wes as quite the prankster.

His mother, Shelley, says he played a prank on her just before the AFC Championship game.

“He said, ‘OK mom and dad, it’s really hard to get these tickets, so you’re sitting outside,'” Shelley says.

Knowing it was going to be brutally cold, the family began preparing for the winter weather.

“Three days go by and then he hands us our tickets to go to the game, and they are inside, so just stuff like that.”

Welker’s dad says Wes is on a very strict diet, but after the game there’s a chance, “he’ll celebrate with one of his mom’s hot fudge sundaes.”

The Super Bowl will air on Oklahoma’s News Channel 4 at 5:30 p.m., Sunday.
